With the theater production 'Mooie jaren,' Het nieuwstedelijk creates a chronicle of our time, in both grand and small stories. Set against the backdrop of mine closures and moon landings, of free love and oil crises, of car-free and black Sundays, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of banks, we follow a generation of friends in a small town. They discover life, love, and a world that is constantly changing.
Danielle is a young medical student. Her encounter with the charismatic professor Julia Sporken will give her life a new direction. Miner Luc, “Luckieluc” to his friends, decides himself to study after being forced into retirement at 38. Young doctoral student Stella turns out to have multiple sclerosis. Yassine sees his dream of becoming a professional footballer shatter after an accident. They all search for the resilience that will drive them forward again.
For 'Mooie jaren,' Het nieuwstedelijk brings together a dream cast, with familiar faces and emerging talent. This co-production with the fifty-year-old university of Hasselt is inspired by recent history and transitions in the province of Limburg and around the world.
