The biting comedy 'Oude Meesters' is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Bernhard. "Convincing nonsense," according to the reviews.
In the novel, the so-called intellectual Atzbacher does little more than relay to the reader what the admired music critic Reger has told him. Comp. Marius doubles this distortion by having Kris Van Trier and Vincent van den Berg perform the monologue together. Not one, but two voices deliver the monologue as a single character.
The duo reflects on art, parents, education, and politics. They hate everything and everyone, yet they cannot live without them. That is the tragedy, but also the comedy. They complement each other, contradict each other, flatter each other, and ridicule each other. In fiery tirades, they spare no one, not even themselves.
